Avoid These Career Change Mistakes—And Learn How to Fix Them

If you are making a career change and have been searching for a new job for while, you can feel like navigating a maze without finding a clear exit.

While persistence is key, many as a job seeker you may unknowingly sabotage your job seeking journey by making avoidable mistakes. These mistakes range from misusing your network to sending out generic résumés and those errors can prolong the job hunt and lead to missed opportunities.

Here is a short list of the most common pitfalls and explore solutions on how best to correct them.

1. Applying for Too Many Jobs Without Focus

Many job seekers believe that casting a wide net increases their chances of landing a job. However, statistics show that applicants who apply for 21 to 80 jobs have a 30% chance of receiving an offer, while those who apply for more than 81 jobs see their chances drop to just 20%. Quantity does not always equal quality.

Solution – : Instead of mass-applying, create a focussed strategy and tailor your applications to roles that align with your skills and experience. Research each company, customise your résumé, and craft a compelling cover letter that speaks directly to the job description.

2. Not Customising Your Résumé

A generic résumé is a job seeker’s worst enemy. Many applicants send the same résumé to every company, assuming recruiters will see their potential.

In reality, either the résumés are screened by software or scrutinised by hiring managers – either way, a one-size-fits-all approach often leads to rejection.

Solution:

Customise your résumé for each role. Highlight relevant experience, use keywords from the job description, and ensure your achievements align with the company’s needs. Avoid jargon and focus on clear, impactful language.

3. Misusing or Neglecting Your Network

Networking is one of the most powerful tools in a job search, yet many job seekers fail to use it effectively. A LinkedIn study found that 70% of job seekers land jobs through networking. However, many candidates either do not reach out to their connections individually or approach networking in a way, that is too transactional.

Solution:

Instead of simply asking for job leads, build genuine relationships. Engage with professionals in your industry, attend informal as well as business and professional networking events, and seek informational interviews. Remember, success often comes from second- or third-degree connections, so expand your reach beyond immediate contacts.

4. Relying Too Much on Online Applications

Many job seekers believe that submitting applications through job boards is the best way to land a role. However, research suggests that referred candidates are over 4.5 times more likely to be hired compared to those who apply cold through job postings. Employers often prioritise candidates who come through their network.

Solution:

While online applications are necessary, do not rely on them exclusively. Research and reach out to hiring managers, connect with employees at your preferred, target companies, and leverage referrals to increase your chances of getting noticed.

5. Failing to Prepare for Interviews

Even when job seekers land interviews, many fail to prepare adequately. A lack of research, weak responses, and poor communication skills can quickly derail an opportunity.

Solution:

Before an interview, research the company and the individual interviewers thoroughly, practice answering common questions, and prepare thoughtful questions to ask the interviewer. Confidence and preparation go a long way in making a lasting impression.
